Dermalogica has an existing product called Precleanse. This is an oil based cleanser that serves as your first step in cleansing skin typically in the evening when washing away makeup, oils and dirt from the day. You put this product in dry hands and apply to your dry face. Massage the oil into the skin and then add water to emulsify. The product becomes a milky consistency, removing products and oil build up from the skin. You then continue with your normal cleanser, exfoliation, toner, moisturizer routine.
Precleanse Balm is more of a lotion/gel type consistency. This product comes with a cleansing mitt. I apply the balm to my dry face first, massage it into the skin and then take the mitt and work the product in to the skin, exfoliating in the process. To emulsify, add water again and continue massaging the product into your skin.
What’s the difference between the two?
The two main differences are the consistency of the products. Precleanse is an oil and Precleanse Balm is more of a lotion. Additionally, Precleanse Balm comes with a mitt to get more of a mechanical exfoliation and removal of debris.
I prefer the PreCleanse Balm over regular Precleanse for a few reasons.
- One product, excellent results. I think Precleanse Balm is better at removing makeup and oils from the skin. I found it gave my skin a good prep for cleansing and subsequent skin care steps. Alisa from Bliss Spa & Salon and I discussed that Precleanse Balm not only seems to be more effective at removing eye makeup but it’s also gentler. Precleanse can be used to remove eye makeup but tends to occasionally have a stinging sensation accompanying its application to the eye area. I was previously using Dermalogica’s Soothing Eye Make-up Remover for eye make-up and then Precleanse for the rest of my face. I will now use Precleanse Balm eliminating the extra product and step. I can use Precleanse Balm on my eyes and there is no stinging sensation, it removes waterproof makeup with ease and it doesn’t leave an oily residue on the eyelashes like some oil based eye make-up removers.
- Less waste. With Precleanse, the oil tends to run through your fingers as you are trying to apply it to your face. The balm can be applied to the face in dollops therefore, you don’t lose any of the product in the sink as you are applying.
- Exfoliated Clean. The mitt adds a bit of a cleansing/exfoliating boost. I can massage the product on my face and I feel like I am not only getting sufficient removal of products and dirt from my face but my skin is also left clean and smooth.
What’s the price difference?
Precleanse retails for $58.00 for 150 ml.
Precleanse Balm retails at $62.00 for 90 ml.
Overall, I really liked this product and would replace Precleanse with Precleanse Balm. I will be purchasing the regular size version which also comes with a larger size mitt and incorporate this into my skincare regime. It is such a time saving bonus to be able to use one product to remove ALL makeup.
My overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 out of 5 stars)
I was comped the travel size version by Bliss Spa & Salon to trial for this review.
