If you’ve ever thought, “Since I already went off plan, I might as well start again tomorrow,” you’re not alone.
Often, this mindset stems from the belief that perfection is the only way progress happens.
While having high standards can be a powerful trait, it can also quietly become the thing that sabotages consistency.
When I was in second grade, our mornings started with 20 minutes of colouring. There were pre-printed sheets at the front of the classroom, and each day we’d grab one and get to work.
I remember colouring outside the lines one day and crumpling up the paper to start over. Then I did it again. And again.
The result? I never actually finished a single colouring page (Picture a pile of crumpled ones beside my desk.)
That moment stuck with me more than I realized. The discomfort of imperfection felt so strong that starting over felt safer than continuing imperfectly.
At the time, I didn’t know how much this pattern would follow me.
It would make it harder to take risks, to learn through action, and to trust progress that wasn’t perfect.
Fast forward to my first experience working with a fitness coach.
With the limited knowledge I had at the time, I believed that unless I completed every set, every rep, and every workout exactly as written, I wouldn’t see results. That mindset taught me a lot about effort and discipline, but it also came with pressure.
After each workout, I would mentally replay it:
Did I push hard enough? Did I do it right? Did I mess this up?
Eventually, I learned something important:
It wasn’t perfect execution that moved the needle…it was consistency and intention over time.
And that’s the piece I want to emphasize here:
Some is always better than none.
Especially when you’re building habits.
There are moments where intensity matters. But when it comes to establishing daily movement, tracking, or nourishment, consistency will consistently outperform perfection.
If you only had five minutes to walk, that still counts.
If you only tracked one meal, that still matters.
If today wasn’t perfect, but you showed up = that’s progress.
This isn’t permission to disengage or half-ass the process.
It’s permission to keep going even when it’s imperfect.
Because showing up imperfectly creates lasting change by building momentum and confidence.
